Metropolitan Amfilohije was born in Morača, Montenegro on January 7, 1938. He graduated from the Theological Seminary in Belgrade in 1962, and was ordained as a priest in 1968.
On June 15, 1973 he was awarded a doctorate from the Theological School of Athens.
On June 16, 1985, he was consecrated as Bishop of Banat. On December 30, 1990, he was elected Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral.
He led the Montenegro Metropolis for 30 years, guiding his flock through years of government persecution. Hundreds of thousands of Orthodox faithful took to the streets twice weekly in Montenegro in the first half of the year 2020, protesting the government’s scandalous anti-Orthodox policies, inspiring Orthodox Christians throughout the world.
His Eminence Metropolitan Amfilohije’s, the beloved Metropolitan of Montenegro of the Serbian Orthodox Church, earthly missions were to raise the Serbian people up, to bring them back to Christ, and to defend Orthodoxy in Montenegro.
After accomplishing his missions, his eminence reposed in the Lord at 8:20 a.m. on October 31st at the Clinical Hospital Center of Montenegro from acute pneumonia caused by the covid19 (may our God burn the virus).
The Metropolitan received Holy Communion before departing to the Lord.
May his memory be eternal!
