In the Russian village of Lavlja, Arkhangelsk region, in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the icon of Christ the Savior began to stream myrrh. Last month in the same diocese, in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Onego, the icon of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious also poured myrrh, while in March of this year the icon of St. Sergius of Radonezh also streamed myrrh.
The icon of Christ the Savior began to stream myrrh in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lavlja near Arkhangelsk. “We noticed the oil on October 12, during the prayer to the Holy Mother of God,” said the priest of the temple, priest Vladimir Loginov.
According to father Vladimir, this is not the first unusual case in the church. In March 2022, the parishioners witnessed the myrrh streaming icon of Saint Sergius of Radonezh.
We also remind you that on September 27 of this year, on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of Christ, the icons of the Holy Great Martyr and the Victorious George were sprinkled in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Oneja.
Myrrh is a phenomenon in Christianity associated with the creation of oily moisture (myrrh) on icons and relics of saints. The liquid can be thick and viscous, like tar, or resemble dew
The myrrh streaming of icons is an undeniable, repeatedly recorded fact that is not questioned. In the opinion of a number of Orthodox theologians, this phenomenon can be seen as a manifestation of God’s grace, sent to comfort and spiritually strengthen believers. An icon that exudes myrrh testifies to the real presence in the Church of the one depicted on it: it testifies to the closeness of God, His Most Pure Mother, and the saints.
The theological interpretation of the phenomenon of myrrh requires special spiritual wisdom and sobriety. The excitement surrounding this phenomenon is misplaced.
